Settled in the 1850's by settlers including African-American slaves who had purchased their freedom. It remained a multicultural island as black settlers, mainly from California, were followed by immigrants from Portugal, Scandinavia and Kanakas, Hawaiian settlers brought initially by the Hudson's Bay Company. SaltSpring Island has a laid back, funky atmosphere and is rich in local artisans, gourmet foods and organic hobby farms.
